The Statue of the Vietnamese Heroic Mother in Tam Ky | Things to Do in Quang Nam
The Statue of the Vietnamese Heroic Mother – a quiet stop in Tam Ky, Da Nang. If someone asks what to do in Tam Ky, many people will mention Tam Thanh Beach or the mural village. But for me, the place that stayed the longest in my mind was The Statue of the Vietnamese Heroic Mother. It sits quietly on Cam Mountain, not far from the sea, not loud, not dramatic.

I didn’t come here with a sightseeing mood. I thought I would stop for a few minutes, look around, then leave. But once I parked the motorbike and stood there, I stayed much longer than expected.
Where is The Statue of the Vietnamese Heroic Mother?
The Statue of the Vietnamese Heroic Mother is located in Phu Thanh village, Tam Phu commune, Tam Ky, Da Nang city. It is about 5 kilometers from Tam Ky city center. The road is easy to find, but quite empty, especially at midday.
The monument is open 24 hours a day and entrance is free. That feels right somehow. A place like this should not need a ticket.
Why is the monument in Tam Ky, Quang Nam?
Quang Nam is the province with the highest number of Vietnamese Heroic Mothers in the country, more than 15,000. Across Vietnam, over 140,000 mothers were honored with this title.
The statue is inspired by Mother Nguyen Thi Thu, born in 1904 in Quang Nam. She had 12 children. During the wars, nine of her children sacrificed their lives. Her husband, son-in-law, and grandchildren were also lost. Writing these lines still feels heavy.
Her old house once sheltered revolutionary leaders and today it is a historical site. Her life was simple, but what she gave was beyond words.
Standing in front of the monument
The entire complex covers more than 16 hectares, but it does not feel overwhelming. The main structure looks like a mountain made of stone. At the center is an 18-meter-high semi-bust of Mother Thu, with both sides opening like her arms.
There is a curved lake in front of the statue. The wind moves gently across the water. At that moment, I didn’t want to take photos anymore. This is not really a place for beautiful pictures. It is a place to stand still.
Small details that matter
In front of the monument stand eight stone pillars, each 11.2 meters high. The number eight represents harmony and completeness. It also reflects the eight words President Ho Chi Minh gave to Vietnamese women: Heroic – Indomitable – Faithful – Capable.
Inside the statue is an exhibition area, which is not open every day. If you are lucky to enter, you will see very ordinary items: cooking pots, weaving looms, old photographs, flower vases from family altars. Nothing modern, nothing flashy, but the atmosphere makes people speak more quietly.
How much time should you spend?
I would say at least 30 minutes, but most people stay longer without realizing it. The surrounding area is filled with trees and open grasslands, with places to sit and rest.
Right next to the monument is Quang Nam Martyrs Cemetery, where tens of thousands of soldiers are buried. If you are already here, it feels natural to visit both.
How to get to The Statue of the Vietnamese Heroic Mother
- From Tam Ky city center: about 5 km, 10–15 minutes by motorbike or taxi. It is better to ask the driver to wait, as taxis are rare in the area.
- From Hoi An or Da Nang: 45–80 km. Many travelers follow the coastal Vo Chi Cong road. The route is easy and scenic.
Many visitors combine this stop with Ky Anh Tunnels or Tam Thanh Mural Village for a full day trip.
Is it worth visiting?
If you are only looking for check-in spots, this place may feel too quiet. But if you want to understand Vietnam beyond guidebooks, The Statue of the Vietnamese Heroic Mother in Tam Ky is worth visiting at least once.
I left in the late afternoon. I didn’t buy anything, didn’t eat anything. Just one simple thought stayed with me: some journeys are not meant to entertain, but to remember.
