Visiting The Statue of the Vietnamese Heroic Mother – A Heartfelt Guide

The Statue of the Vietnamese Heroic Mother: More Than Just a Monument. Hey everyone! Today I want to share a bit about my recent trip to a place that… well, honestly, it wasn’t just a sightseeing stop. It was a place that made me truly feel the “soul” of Vietnam. I’m talking about The Statue of the Vietnamese Heroic Mother (Tượng đài Mẹ Thứ) in Tam Ky, Da Nang city.

To be frank, I originally planned to just head straight to Tam Thanh beach. But as I drove past this massive monument on the hill, I felt pulled to stop. And I’m so glad I did. I ended up standing there in silence for quite a long time.

Quick “Traveler” Info

  • Location: Cam Mountain, Tam Phu, Tam Ky, Da Nang city (about 50km from Hoi An).
  • Entrance Fee: Totally free (which is amazing for such a huge site).
  • Hours: The park is open 24/7, but the museum inside the statue is usually open 7:30 AM – 11:00 AM & 1:30 PM – 4:30 PM (closed on Mondays).
  • Best Time: Early morning or late afternoon to avoid the crazy heat.

My Personal Take: “A Mother’s Embrace as Wide as the Sea”

The moment you step into the 16-hectare plaza, the sheer scale hits you. But it’s not “scary” big; it’s more like a warm, overwhelming embrace. The statue is modeled after Mother Nguyen Thi Thu. This lady… she lost 9 sons, a son-in-law, and 2 grandsons in the wars. Just thinking about that makes my heart feel heavy.

There are a few things that really stuck with me

  • The 8 Giant Pillars: Right at the entrance, there are these tall stone columns (over 11 meters!). They represent the “eight golden words” given to Vietnamese women: Heroic, Indomitable, Gentle, and Hardworking. They look so proud against the blue sky.
  • The Heart of the Mother: Did you know you can go inside the statue? There’s a museum there. It’s filled with old rice pots, looms, and photos of mothers from all over the country. It’s very quiet in there, almost like you can hear the whispers of history.
  • The Lake: There’s a crescent-shaped pond in front. On a sunny day, the reflection of the granite makes everything look so sacred.

Real Tips from a “Lost Traveler”

If you’re driving from Da Nang or Hoi An like I did, take the Vo Chi Cong coastal road. The road is super smooth and the view is great. However, a small warning: the sun in Da Nang city is no joke! It’s “burning” hot, so bring an umbrella or a hat, or you’ll turn into a lobster like I almost did.

A little hack: After visiting the statue, definitely swing by Tam Thanh Mural Village. It’s only about 10 minutes away. You get the history fix at the monument and then some cool “Instagrammable” art at the village. Perfect combo!

Why should you visit?

In our busy lives, we often forget the sacrifices that built the peace we enjoy today. Standing at the foot of The Statue of the Vietnamese Heroic Mother, you feel small, but in a good way. It’s a place to say “thank you” and to breathe in the fresh air of the “Forbidden Mountain” (Núi Cấm).

So, if you are in Quang Nam,Da Nang city don’t just stay in Hoi An. Take a ride to Tam Ky. Visit Mother Thu. It’s an experience that stays with you long after you’ve left.
